  • Total Data Eradication for Computer Tape

Recycling used or new surplus computer tape has never been easier. Not only is it environmentally friendly, selling old or surplus tape has another benefit: Instead of paying for disposal, companies can profit from the sale of decommissioned tape.

Best of all, World Data Products guarantees total data eradication.

Not all computer tape resellers have the standards required for total data eradication. Some companies simply rewrite the tape header. In this case, the tape drive will consider the tape to be empty because the header is clean, but the data is still there. This means that there is still a chance the data on the tape could be read. Other companies overwrite a portion of the tape but don't erase the entire tape from end to end. Data Erasure is a time-consuming process that can take up to two hours per LTO tape.

This is our process at World Data Products:

    1. Audit the tapes by Volser. This audit is compared to the list of tapes that are approved to be destroyed. While this might seem to be an unnecessary step, we can assure you that many tapes are accidentally destroyed when an audit is not performed.
    2. Overwrite each tape from end to end.
    3. Read and write each tape from end to end.
    4. Provide a certification letter. This will serve as proof that the data on the tapes was completely eradicated, tracing each tape by Volser.

  • What is Total Data Eradication?

Are you considering Certified Computer Tape for your organization and wondering how a tape reseller can guarantee that all of the sensitive data has been removed? Or, perhaps you are looking to sell old computer tape and want to be confident that your data will be eradicated before the tape is resold. The answer is Total Data Eradication.

What is Total Data Eradication and what does it involve? Total data eradication is a comprehensive data removal process used by the most qualified tape services companies to erase information. It's important to recognize that not all tape resellers use the total data eradication method to ensure that tapes are in like-new condition. Total data eradication is a multi-step process that includes the following steps:

    • Onsite tape audit. The total data eradication process starts with an onsite audit of Volser numbers on the tapes you wish to sell. A list of audited tapes is compared with the list of tapes you intend to sell and wipe clean to ensure there aren't any discrepancies. Once the reseller is certain that they have the right tapes, they transport those tapes in a secure truck or shipping container back to the warehouse. Tapes that are waiting to be destroyed are kept in a safe and secure location until they are ready to go through the data eradication process.
    • Warehouse tape audit. Once the tapes arrive at the reseller's warehouse, they are audited a second time to ensure that all tapes are accounted for and that only the right tapes are scheduled to have their data destroyed. The second audit list is sent to the client for data eradication approval. Once approval is received, the data eradication process begins.
    • Tape overwriting. Many of today's high-tech tapes cannot be degaussed (erased) to remove data. Instead, these tapes are overwritten with generic data to wipe out any proprietary data that might exist on them. It is essential that the overwriting process be completed from end-to-end on each tape. This process may need to be repeated multiple times to ensure complete overwriting of the original data.
    • Read and write testing. After a tape is overwritten in the total data eradication process, it is necessary to test that tape to make sure that only the overwritten data remains. To do this, each tape is read to make sure that all sensitive data is removed. If a tape is found to contain bits of the original data, the tape is run through the overwriting and reading steps again.
    • Testing for errors. The final step in the total data eradication process is to test each tape for errors. Quality Certified Computer Tape that has completed the total data eradication process will not contain any permanent or gross errors, a fact that even new computer tape can't boast.

Total data eradication is what makes the difference between quality certified computer tape and the other used tape products. More about Total Data Eradication by Volser here. We also offer media destruction and onsite erasure services as well.
