  • Recycling Used Servers

Recycle Your Old ServersWith the growing emphasis on reducing an organization's carbon footprint, today's IT professionals are responsible for finding ways to dispose of used servers in ways that are more friendly to the environment.

Often, a data center that needs to get rid of servers no longer in use, will contact a company that specializes in ITAD (IT Asset Disposition). Recycling a decommissioned server generally involves parting out the hardware to components including the drives, memory, fans, power supplies, and network adapter cards that can be used again. If the chassis or board is too old for resale, it is recycled responsibly with a qualified electronics recycling vendor.

Is there way to recycle used servers for free? Yes!

World Data Products has a used server buyback program. We buy packages of server and networking equipment from data centers. If the list of hardware has enough value left in the components, we coordinate and pay for shipping to our facility. If the hardware is too old and would cost more to ship than the components are worth, we will recommend local disposal with an electronics recycling firm. Brands we look for include used Dell, HP, IBM, and Cisco UCS servers.

    Here's how it works:

    1. Create a list of the server hardware you wish to recycle. Be as specific as possible, how many, which kind, and capacity of drives? How many and which processors? How much memory is there in each server, power supplies etc.?
    2. Assess your company's data security policy. Will your company be responsible for data destruction, or will World Data Products need to provide data/media destruction or shredding services? We perform a thorough audit of the equipment, resetting the configuration back to its original factory settings. All drives are tested and formatted. Additional erasure or destruction requirements must be agreed on in advance.
    3. Get the specifics on shipping. World Data Products arranges and pays for the shipping. We can even coordinate packing when necessary. Is the data center on the 12th floor with no access to packing materials? If there is enough value in the equipment, we can get it done.
    4. Send us your list. Upload your list in one of these document or spreadsheet formats (xlsx, docx, txt, rtf), or just paste the text into our "sell servers" contact form.

Recycling is a great way to keep old hardware out of the landfills. Selling decommissioned equipment to an ITAD professional enables your department to recycle server equipment and potentially make money at the same time.

World Data Products buys used servers, networking equipment, and storage from many brands including Cisco, Dell, HP, UCS, IBM, Super Micro, EMC, NetApp and others. We also buy and sell IP phones, wireless access points and controllers.

  • Where do refurbished servers and switches come from?

This is a common question in our industry. Here’s one way that IT hardware finds its way into the refurbished equipment market:

Graphic of question marks and data center server

A data center leases or purchases a server or enterprise router and uses it for 2-3 years. The useful life of most IT hardware is 5+ years, but many organizations continue to refresh based on the schedule suggested by the manufacturer.

When it’s time to upgrade to the latest version, the original equipment is returned to the leasing company. The leasing company then sells the hardware to a third party reseller. It is also very common for the original owner to sell the equipment directly to a reseller.

A reputable reseller cleans, tests, restores the hardware and software to original factory defaults, and finally sells the equipment to a new organization for a fraction of the original cost. The hardware lifecycle starts over, creating value for the new owner, and another server is kept out of the landfill. It's a win for everyone.

    What does "refurbished" actually mean?

It's important to recognize that there's a difference between refurbished IT equipment and untested used hardware from the auction site. While all refurbished equipment is, by definition, used, not all used equipment is refurbished.

Refurbished equipment is inspected for authenticity, cleaned, tested, repaired as needed, returned to “like-new” condition, and covered by a warranty. Reputable resellers offer warranties on their refurbished equipment, and often extended maintenance programs that rival the service of the original manufacturer. Used IT hardware can be in any condition and often does not have any guarantee to function.

Is there an advantage to buying refurbished equipment? It depends on the requirements of the application, and how fast you need the hardware. Every piece of software or workload has a recommended amount of processing power or memory for optimal performance. If the server configuration worked perfectly for the application in the last data center, it will work in yours. Better yet, the hardware has just been rigorously tested and possibly upgraded to your custom configuration. If you can accomplish the same task at half the price, there is an obvious advantage to using refurbished hardware. Finally, refurbished servers and switches are generally in stock and can ship quickly when you need it. Our extensive inventory enables us to receive orders and sell server configurations that can ship same day.

  • What is Total Data Eradication?

Are you considering Certified Computer Tape for your organization and wondering how a tape reseller can guarantee that all of the sensitive data has been removed? Or, perhaps you are looking to sell old computer tape and want to be confident that your data will be eradicated before the tape is resold. The answer is Total Data Eradication.

What is Total Data Eradication and what does it involve? Total data eradication is a comprehensive data removal process used by the most qualified tape services companies to erase information. It's important to recognize that not all tape resellers use the total data eradication method to ensure that tapes are in like-new condition. Total data eradication is a multi-step process that includes the following steps:

    • Onsite tape audit. The total data eradication process starts with an onsite audit of Volser numbers on the tapes you wish to sell. A list of audited tapes is compared with the list of tapes you intend to sell and wipe clean to ensure there aren't any discrepancies. Once the reseller is certain that they have the right tapes, they transport those tapes in a secure truck or shipping container back to the warehouse. Tapes that are waiting to be destroyed are kept in a safe and secure location until they are ready to go through the data eradication process.
    • Warehouse tape audit. Once the tapes arrive at the reseller's warehouse, they are audited a second time to ensure that all tapes are accounted for and that only the right tapes are scheduled to have their data destroyed. The second audit list is sent to the client for data eradication approval. Once approval is received, the data eradication process begins.
    • Tape overwriting. Many of today's high-tech tapes cannot be degaussed (erased) to remove data. Instead, these tapes are overwritten with generic data to wipe out any proprietary data that might exist on them. It is essential that the overwriting process be completed from end-to-end on each tape. This process may need to be repeated multiple times to ensure complete overwriting of the original data.
    • Read and write testing. After a tape is overwritten in the total data eradication process, it is necessary to test that tape to make sure that only the overwritten data remains. To do this, each tape is read to make sure that all sensitive data is removed. If a tape is found to contain bits of the original data, the tape is run through the overwriting and reading steps again.
    • Testing for errors. The final step in the total data eradication process is to test each tape for errors. Quality Certified Computer Tape that has completed the total data eradication process will not contain any permanent or gross errors, a fact that even new computer tape can't boast.

Total data eradication is what makes the difference between quality certified computer tape and the other used tape products. More about Total Data Eradication by Volser here. We also offer media destruction and onsite erasure services as well.

  • How to Dispose of Cisco Networking Equipment

Looking to sell used Cisco switches and routers?

stack of refurbished cisco switches Used Cisco switches ready to be refurbished in our tech center

Do you have Cisco networking hardware in the rack that you want to sell or recycle? Not sure how to dispose of it? Let's take a look at the options for disposing of that surplus or decommissioned Cisco gear. Here we go!

Option #1: Do nothing. OK, that’s a bad option. Hiding used Cisco products somewhere around the office or the data center storeroom isn't an effective solution for the IT Asset Disposition (ITAD) problem.

Option #2: Pay a company to dispose of your Cisco networking equipment for you. A fairly common way of getting rid of used networking equipment is to pay an electronics recycling company to take it and recycle it responsibly. While this gets rid of the problem, the service comes at a price and doesn’t do anything to help the bottom line or increase the return on investment.

Option #3: Sell the switches or routers on your own. Is your company a sales organization? Do you have the time to deal with listing, marketing, selling, packing and shipping networking equipment?

Option #4: Sell the used Cisco networking equipment to World Data Products! Hint: This is the best option. Why?

    1. The used switches, routers, and wireless products go away within days of contacting us.
    2. Your company can make money in the process.
    3. It’s easy, we take care of the logistics.
    4. With thirty years of experience, we are reliable and one of the most active used Cisco equipment buyers in the industry.

Disposing of used Cisco IT assets doesn't have to be hard, expensive, or time-consuming. Selling networking or server equipment to World Data Products will save you time, money and the hassle of other disposal methods. We have been doing this since 1987, let's get it done!

We are currently seeing a lot of buying and selling activity for the following used Cisco Catalyst switch models: 2960 and 2960x, 3560, C3560x, C3750g, the 3750 and the newer 3850. 2900 series routers, and Adaptive Security Appliance firewalls such as the ASA 5505 and ASA 5506 are popular as well.
