  • Recycling Used Servers

Recycle Your Old ServersWith the growing emphasis on reducing an organization's carbon footprint, today's IT professionals are responsible for finding ways to dispose of used servers in ways that are more friendly to the environment.

Often, a data center that needs to get rid of servers no longer in use, will contact a company that specializes in ITAD (IT Asset Disposition). Recycling a decommissioned server generally involves parting out the hardware to components including the drives, memory, fans, power supplies, and network adapter cards that can be used again. If the chassis or board is too old for resale, it is recycled responsibly with a qualified electronics recycling vendor.

Is there way to recycle used servers for free? Yes!

World Data Products has a used server buyback program. We buy packages of server and networking equipment from data centers. If the list of hardware has enough value left in the components, we coordinate and pay for shipping to our facility. If the hardware is too old and would cost more to ship than the components are worth, we will recommend local disposal with an electronics recycling firm. Brands we look for include used Dell, HP, IBM, and Cisco UCS servers.

    Here's how it works:

    1. Create a list of the server hardware you wish to recycle. Be as specific as possible, how many, which kind, and capacity of drives? How many and which processors? How much memory is there in each server, power supplies etc.?
    2. Assess your company's data security policy. Will your company be responsible for data destruction, or will World Data Products need to provide data/media destruction or shredding services? We perform a thorough audit of the equipment, resetting the configuration back to its original factory settings. All drives are tested and formatted. Additional erasure or destruction requirements must be agreed on in advance.
    3. Get the specifics on shipping. World Data Products arranges and pays for the shipping. We can even coordinate packing when necessary. Is the data center on the 12th floor with no access to packing materials? If there is enough value in the equipment, we can get it done.
    4. Send us your list. Upload your list in one of these document or spreadsheet formats (xlsx, docx, txt, rtf), or just paste the text into our "sell servers" contact form.

Recycling is a great way to keep old hardware out of the landfills. Selling decommissioned equipment to an ITAD professional enables your department to recycle server equipment and potentially make money at the same time.

World Data Products buys used servers, networking equipment, and storage from many brands including Cisco, Dell, HP, UCS, IBM, Super Micro, EMC, NetApp and others. We also buy and sell IP phones, wireless access points and controllers.

  • Where do refurbished servers and switches come from?

This is a common question in our industry. Here’s one way that IT hardware finds its way into the refurbished equipment market:

Graphic of question marks and data center server

A data center leases or purchases a server or enterprise router and uses it for 2-3 years. The useful life of most IT hardware is 5+ years, but many organizations continue to refresh based on the schedule suggested by the manufacturer.

When it’s time to upgrade to the latest version, the original equipment is returned to the leasing company. The leasing company then sells the hardware to a third party reseller. It is also very common for the original owner to sell the equipment directly to a reseller.

A reputable reseller cleans, tests, restores the hardware and software to original factory defaults, and finally sells the equipment to a new organization for a fraction of the original cost. The hardware lifecycle starts over, creating value for the new owner, and another server is kept out of the landfill. It's a win for everyone.

    What does "refurbished" actually mean?

It's important to recognize that there's a difference between refurbished IT equipment and untested used hardware from the auction site. While all refurbished equipment is, by definition, used, not all used equipment is refurbished.

Refurbished equipment is inspected for authenticity, cleaned, tested, repaired as needed, returned to “like-new” condition, and covered by a warranty. Reputable resellers offer warranties on their refurbished equipment, and often extended maintenance programs that rival the service of the original manufacturer. Used IT hardware can be in any condition and often does not have any guarantee to function.

Is there an advantage to buying refurbished equipment? It depends on the requirements of the application, and how fast you need the hardware. Every piece of software or workload has a recommended amount of processing power or memory for optimal performance. If the server configuration worked perfectly for the application in the last data center, it will work in yours. Better yet, the hardware has just been rigorously tested and possibly upgraded to your custom configuration. If you can accomplish the same task at half the price, there is an obvious advantage to using refurbished hardware. Finally, refurbished servers and switches are generally in stock and can ship quickly when you need it. Our extensive inventory enables us to receive orders and sell server configurations that can ship same day.

  • IT Hardware Resellers

What You Need to Know About IT Hardware ResellersThere are two types of IT hardware resellers: original equipment manufacturer (OEM) partner organizations and independent hardware resellers such as World Data Products.

Chances are good that you have done business with both types of vendors. Here is a comparison of the two business models, and why we have leaned towards the advantages of being an independent IT hardware provider.

    OEM Partner Resellers:

    • Has a signed agreement with the manufacturer that states that they will offer the OEM’s line of products
    • May have limitations regarding other product lines or channels in which they may sell
    • Is likely authorized to sell OEM warranties and maintenance
    • Has the rights to use logos and other branding in their marketing
    • May or may not offer refurbished products
    • Probably does not buy used server or network hardware directly from end users

OEM Partner Summary: Partner resellers are ideal for organizations that are interested in buying new equipment and typically refresh areas of their data center every three years.

    Independent IT Hardware Resellers:

    • Are independent of manufacturers and have no limitations on what they can sell
    • Offer third-party maintenance agreements to service or repair any brand of data center hardware
    • Will find the best possible new or refurbished hardware solutions for your company's requirements rather than being confined to a specific manufacturer's restrictions
    • Can stock or source legacy or "end of life" servers, networking items, and parts
    • Do not sell OEM maintenance and support but offer third party maintenance options at a fraction of the cost of OEM maintenance programs
    • Typically offer buyback programs to purchase used servers, storage, and networking gear directly from the end users
    • May offer additional data center services such as on-site or off-site data erasure or destruction, data migration, e-waste recycling, and other solutions
    • Sell server upgrades and custom configurations
    • Companies that buy and sell used equipment have short lead times. Need something fast? Our extensive inventory enables us to receive orders and sell server configurations that can ship same day.

Independent Reseller Summary: Independent hardware resellers are a good fit for organizations that seek to fully leverage their IT budget, or are looking for single-source solution providers that provide an array of value-added services.

There are benefits and limitations with both types of IT resellers. Many organizations rely on both depending on the application. The key lies in choosing a partner that will best meet your company's needs for the project at hand and the budget available.

  • 7 Reasons to Buy Refurbished Servers

Why do so many of our data center customers buy refurbished servers?

    Performance

7 Reasons to Buy Refurbished Servers

Refurbished servers perform like new, sometimes faster depending on the configuration of processors, memory, and drives. Many IT departments refresh their server racks every three years due to agreements with a manufacturer, not because the equipment is worn out. Most servers are very reliable and can be maintained and upgraded without issues for 5-10 years.

    Cost

A refurbished IT hardware item costs much less than new, and has a lower total cost of ownership over time. For many companies, the primary reason to buy refurbished servers over new is cost.

    ROI

Stretch your IT budget! In this business climate, getting the most value out of every dollar and maximizing the budget is likely a high priority for your organization. Buying refurbished provides an opportunity for more of your budget to be spent on other strategic initiatives.

    Reliability

When a customer buys a server from World Data Products, the server has been tested multiple times. First, at the factory. Then, when a data center buyback package is received in our audit center. Finally, a third test once the customer configuration is installed before shipping to you, the customer.

    Maintenance

Parts for servers one or two generations from new, are readily available across the marketplace. The more common and successful the model, the greater availability of affordable replacement parts. In addition, because refurbished servers are so affordable, many IT departments keep key replacement components in stock, or a hot spare on the shelf or in the rack, ready to use. Third party maintenance plans can cover refurbished servers and networking equipment.

    Scalability

When pre-owned servers are so affordable compared to new, a data center can respond quickly to requests for virtualization, new applications, a sandbox for testing, or changes in workload.

    Leadtime

There is generally no significant lead time. World Data Products has an extensive inventory of refurbished Dell, HP, IBM, and Cisco UCS components. That means we can receive orders and sell server configurations that can often ship same day, or within a few days at most. Need something fast?

  • Free disposal of used servers

Free Server DisposalYou ordered new hardware but the data center is still full of used servers, and you're not sure how to recycle them? IT professionals are faced with the task of keeping the rack refreshed with high-performance hardware, and getting the most out of the asset recovery process when the time comes to sell or recycle.

What if we told you that there is a way to get rid of decommissioned servers safely for free? Better yet, you could make money by selling those used servers, drives, and processors?

That's right! You can sell used servers and make money in the process by partnering with World Data Products. After all, we've been helping companies with IT Asset Disposition for thirty years.

Are you saying that I should sell my old servers?

Yes, and here are some good reasons to consider: When you sell your decommissioned hardware rather than paying for it to be put in a landfill, you’re recycling those components. And, you’re enabling another company to find the legacy servers or refurbished parts that they need. As a bonus, you may be able to put money back into your budget and increase the return on investment for the IT department. For some server packages, we will even pay for servers or networking equipment with broken components to salvage the parts that still have value. Best yet, the gear is gone, your problem is solved.

What about data security or total data eradication services?

Questions about security and data destruction are becoming more common every day in our business. Selling your old servers to a reputable IT reseller is very safe. Depending on the quantity, type of drives, and security requirements of your business, it's possible that your company will want to wipe the data at your facility. In some buyback situations with high quantities of drives or projects where sensitive data is involved, data eradication can be purchased as an optional service. World Data Products can manage onsite or offsite data eradication or destruction. Whatever works best for your department, we can help!

Why select World Data Products as your IT buyback partner?

Since 1987, World Data Products has been helping organizations capture more return on investment from IT assets. Plus, we make the process easy! Are the servers wrapped on a pallet at your dock? • Buying Used Server Racks

Are you in the market to buy or sell a used server rack? You’re in luck! As an ITAD (IT Asset Disposition) services provider, we buy decommissioned data center equipment, sometimes still installed in the rack. We mostly buy used servers made by Dell, HP, IBM, Cisco UCS, and others. Every piece of used IT hardware is audited for quality and condition, then goes through our refurbishment process, and is finally offered for sale as refurbished equipment.

Today’s post provides some tips on available features and buying used server racks.

Server Rack Sizes and Features? Customers value a server rack that is well built, has good cable management, ventilation, and can be secured. Data center server racks come in many sizes, 36U and 42U are common, with 42U likely being the most common height. Cabinet features vary by manufacturer and can include a built-in PDU for power distribution and surge protection, cable management, locking doors, adjustable mounting solutions, casters, leveling feet, and secure side panels depending on the security requirements or cooling and ventilation needs of the hardware.

Warranty? Like most refurbished products, any used server rack that you purchase should come with a warranty. Reputable hardware resellers stand behind their products, and nothing conveys confidence in the quality of a product like a warranty.

Maintenance Plan? Some used server racks are eligible for OEM and third party maintenance.

Return on Investment? Buying previously owned, or refurbished IT hardware can be a great way to leverage your IT budget. Getting nearly the same quality as new but spending only a fraction of the cost is a way to dramatically lower the total cost of ownership.

Availability? Our inventory of used server racks is constantly changing, give us a call at 888-210-7636 or Contact one of our IT Hardware Specialists today to discuss your requirements or ask further questions. If you have surplus-new, or used servers to sell, please use our Sell Hardware form and let us know what you are looking to sell.

  • Hardware Emergencies: Hot Spare or Maintenance Program?

Fighting Fires How to Handle Server Hardware Emergencies

You are on the team that is responsible for data center performance and reliability, that means putting out server or networking fires. Is your strategy dependent on maintenance programs, hot spares in the rack or on the shelf, or some combination of both?

Server hardware failure. It happens all the time. Server components such as power supplies or drives will fail eventually.

Fire Extinguishing Tip: Be prepared. Make sure you have spares for your key server components available onsite. If you don't keep spares on hand, World Data Products offers maintenance programs to provide replacements when you need them most.

The key to putting out most IT hardware fires is to develop quality relationships before the emergency so when your next hardware fire pops up, you'll be ready.

  • Moving to Third-Party IT Hardware Maintenance

Making the Move to Third Party IT Hardware MaintenanceThird party maintenance agreements

can be a great way to save your organization money without sacrificing the quality or reliability.

One reason why some IT managers or directors don’t rely more on using a third-party maintenance program is because original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) do their best to capture that business in an ongoing maintenance contract. Service contracts are a very profitable part of the OEM business model and they don’t want to lose that revenue stream.

World Data Products has a data center services division that offers Worldtech™, a server and networking maintenance program that covers all of your IT hardware, from routers and switches to servers and storage arrays. We also provide data erasure and destruction, migration, even moving the data center. Need to dispose of that surplus or decommissioned gear? We have attractive buyback options as well.

If you are ready to explore the savings and benefits of moving to a third party maintenance program, call 888-210-7636 or contact one of our IT Hardware Specialists today for a free, no-obligation consultation regarding IT hardware maintenance or our other services.
