IT Hardware

  • How does a used server become a refurbished server?

used servers compared to refurbished serversIf you're in the market to buy used servers, chances are good that you've run into IT hardware resellers that describe their products as "refurbished." If you're wondering what makes a server refurbished, you aren't alone. Most IT professionals are familiar with two different conditions of IT hardware: new and used. If a server is new, it's never been used. If a server is considered used, you know that another data center owned it before you. Adding the word refurbished can muddy the waters, making it unclear as to exactly what you're buying.

Today, we will clear up the question of what makes a server refurbished.

In order for a server to be considered refurbished, the following must be true:

    • The server has been owned by at least one data center prior to yours; and
    • The server must have been returned to a like-new condition before you bought it.

Sounds simple! It is, but there's more to it than that. Here are specifics that you can count on if you purchase a refurbished server from a reputable IT hardware reseller:

    • Refurbished servers are subjected to comprehensive testing. Reputable IT hardware resellers are careful to test each component to ensure reliability. If a component fails during the testing process, the technician determines whether or not it can be repaired and if it's cost-effective to do so. At World Data Products, we have a well-managed ISO 9001:2008 Quality Management System. Components that do not meet our quality standard are scrapped.

    • Refurbished servers are cleaned. With refurbished servers you don't have to worry about the dust bunnies that might be living inside the case of the server. Used servers are taken apart and carefully cleaned. The outside is cleaned and painted if required.

    • Refurbished servers are reset to original equipment manufacturer OEM factory settings. After a server is cleaned up, tested, and received any necessary cosmetic touch ups, the device is reset to factory settings. What does that mean for you? Well, that refurbished server "thinks" and acts just like a new server--only significantly less expensive.

    • Refurbished IT hardware is backed by a warranty. It's no secret that when you buy a refurbished server, you are buying a product that was once owned by someone else. The difference between buying used and refurbished gear is that with refurbished equipment, the IT hardware reseller that refurbished the gear stands behind their work with a warranty to protech you against any future issues. They believe in their work and will do what they can to make it right in the event that you have issues with your purchase. (Chances are good that you won't have any issues at all, but you know you're covered if you do.)

Remember the golden rule of buying refurbished IT hardware: While all refurbished servers were once owned by someone else (a.k.a. "used"), all used servers are not refurbished. When your IT department buys a refurbished server, you're getting the best of both worlds: the low prices of the "used" server market plus the quality and reliability of buying new.

If your IT department already takes advantage of the savings by choosing previously owned equipment, would you rather fill your data center’s server rack with cheap used servers, or quality refurbished servers offered at a deep discount?

World Data Products sells used Dell servers that have been cleaned in our refurbishment process, tested, and guaranteed with a warranty. When it comes time to refresh your rack, buy a server from a trusted industry leader. We have deep inventory of blade servers, tower servers, and rack mount servers. In addition to Dell servers, we also buy and sell HP, IBM, and Cisco UCS.

  • Where do refurbished servers and switches come from?

This is a common question in our industry. Here’s one way that IT hardware finds its way into the refurbished equipment market:

Graphic of question marks and data center server

A data center leases or purchases a server or enterprise router and uses it for 2-3 years. The useful life of most IT hardware is 5+ years, but many organizations continue to refresh based on the schedule suggested by the manufacturer.

When it’s time to upgrade to the latest version, the original equipment is returned to the leasing company. The leasing company then sells the hardware to a third party reseller. It is also very common for the original owner to sell the equipment directly to a reseller.

A reputable reseller cleans, tests, restores the hardware and software to original factory defaults, and finally sells the equipment to a new organization for a fraction of the original cost. The hardware lifecycle starts over, creating value for the new owner, and another server is kept out of the landfill. It's a win for everyone.

    What does "refurbished" actually mean?

It's important to recognize that there's a difference between refurbished IT equipment and untested used hardware from the auction site. While all refurbished equipment is, by definition, used, not all used equipment is refurbished.

Refurbished equipment is inspected for authenticity, cleaned, tested, repaired as needed, returned to “like-new” condition, and covered by a warranty. Reputable resellers offer warranties on their refurbished equipment, and often extended maintenance programs that rival the service of the original manufacturer. Used IT hardware can be in any condition and often does not have any guarantee to function.

Is there an advantage to buying refurbished equipment? It depends on the requirements of the application, and how fast you need the hardware. Every piece of software or workload has a recommended amount of processing power or memory for optimal performance. If the server configuration worked perfectly for the application in the last data center, it will work in yours. Better yet, the hardware has just been rigorously tested and possibly upgraded to your custom configuration. If you can accomplish the same task at half the price, there is an obvious advantage to using refurbished hardware. Finally, refurbished servers and switches are generally in stock and can ship quickly when you need it. Our extensive inventory enables us to receive orders and sell server configurations that can ship same day.

  • 7 Reasons to Buy Refurbished Servers

Why do so many of our data center customers buy refurbished servers?

    Performance

7 Reasons to Buy Refurbished Servers

Refurbished servers perform like new, sometimes faster depending on the configuration of processors, memory, and drives. Many IT departments refresh their server racks every three years due to agreements with a manufacturer, not because the equipment is worn out. Most servers are very reliable and can be maintained and upgraded without issues for 5-10 years.

    Cost

A refurbished IT hardware item costs much less than new, and has a lower total cost of ownership over time. For many companies, the primary reason to buy refurbished servers over new is cost.

    ROI

Stretch your IT budget! In this business climate, getting the most value out of every dollar and maximizing the budget is likely a high priority for your organization. Buying refurbished provides an opportunity for more of your budget to be spent on other strategic initiatives.

    Reliability

When a customer buys a server from World Data Products, the server has been tested multiple times. First, at the factory. Then, when a data center buyback package is received in our audit center. Finally, a third test once the customer configuration is installed before shipping to you, the customer.

    Maintenance

Parts for servers one or two generations from new, are readily available across the marketplace. The more common and successful the model, the greater availability of affordable replacement parts. In addition, because refurbished servers are so affordable, many IT departments keep key replacement components in stock, or a hot spare on the shelf or in the rack, ready to use. Third party maintenance plans can cover refurbished servers and networking equipment.

    Scalability

When pre-owned servers are so affordable compared to new, a data center can respond quickly to requests for virtualization, new applications, a sandbox for testing, or changes in workload.

    Leadtime

There is generally no significant lead time. World Data Products has an extensive inventory of refurbished Dell, HP, IBM, and Cisco UCS components. That means we can receive orders and sell server configurations that can often ship same day, or within a few days at most. Need something fast?

  • Free disposal of used servers

Free Server DisposalYou ordered new hardware but the data center is still full of used servers, and you're not sure how to recycle them? IT professionals are faced with the task of keeping the rack refreshed with high-performance hardware, and getting the most out of the asset recovery process when the time comes to sell or recycle.

What if we told you that there is a way to get rid of decommissioned servers safely for free? Better yet, you could make money by selling those used servers, drives, and processors?

That's right! You can sell used servers and make money in the process by partnering with World Data Products. After all, we've been helping companies with IT Asset Disposition for thirty years.

Are you saying that I should sell my old servers?

Yes, and here are some good reasons to consider: When you sell your decommissioned hardware rather than paying for it to be put in a landfill, you’re recycling those components. And, you’re enabling another company to find the legacy servers or refurbished parts that they need. As a bonus, you may be able to put money back into your budget and increase the return on investment for the IT department. For some server packages, we will even pay for servers or networking equipment with broken components to salvage the parts that still have value. Best yet, the gear is gone, your problem is solved.

What about data security or total data eradication services?

Questions about security and data destruction are becoming more common every day in our business. Selling your old servers to a reputable IT reseller is very safe. Depending on the quantity, type of drives, and security requirements of your business, it's possible that your company will want to wipe the data at your facility. In some buyback situations with high quantities of drives or projects where sensitive data is involved, data eradication can be purchased as an optional service. World Data Products can manage onsite or offsite data eradication or destruction. Whatever works best for your department, we can help!

Why select World Data Products as your IT buyback partner?

Since 1987, World Data Products has been helping organizations capture more return on investment from IT assets. Plus, we make the process easy! Are the servers wrapped on a pallet at your dock? No problem! Need help with optional packing services to get the shipment ready to go? We can do that too!

  • 5 Ways to Reduce Network Hardware Maintenance Costs

5 Ways to Reduce Network Hardware Maintenance CostsLooking for ways to lower your Cisco networking maintenance costs? Many IT departments are doing the same thing. Network hardware maintenance can take a big bite out of the annual IT budget. Plus, the network is mission critical so most companies require some type of maintenance plan. Here are 5 ways to reduce the cost of maintenance without sacrificing quality:

Shop Around: Getting quotes from multiple potential vendors is one of the easiest ways to cut costs out of your IT budget. By shopping around, you can get a better sense of what a reasonable price is for the level of coverage you need. As with anything, if a particular estimate seems too good to be true, it probably is.

Consider a third party maintenance provider: Third party maintenance providers can offer maintenance plans that provide similar coverage for a fraction of the price. Plus, a third party provider has greater flexibility to tailor a plan to your needs. Concerned about quality? It depends on the organization. However, sometimes the manufacturer uses the same third-party provider to handle some of their maintenance coverage.

Ask for the best possible deal: Rates are negotiable! Always ask, "Is this your best price?"

Avoid automatic renewal clauses: As you read your contract, keep an eye out for auto-renewal clauses and do your best to avoid them. Automatic contract renewals might be positioned as a benefit for you (no lapse in coverage) but without an end date in sight, you may lose the opportunity to ask for better pricing or better coverage.

Consider locking in your annual rate for three to five years: One of the best ways to save money on your maintenance program is to negotiate a set rate for the next three to five years. This will eliminate the need to renegotiate each year and will make budget planning simpler. But be sure to arrange for the opportunity to negotiate a new contract at the end of the term of the agreement.

Networking equipment maintenance is often an important necessity, but there are ways to lower your costs. Shop around, and you're on your way to significant cost savings!

World Data Products offers basic networking maintenance services as well as custom-designed options to meet your organization's needs. Our Worldtech™ programs utilize certified technicians to deliver fast resolution to keep everything running smoothly, or repaired/replaced as quickly as possible when that is necessary.

  • Alternative to Cisco Networking Maintenance

Alternative to Cisco Hardware MaintenanceIt’s no secret that Cisco Smart Net Total Care is expensive, but IT departments continue to buy Smart Net coverage because it works and provides peace of mind. What if you could obtain a similar maintenance program complete with options for next business day replacement, but for a lot less money?

It's like this: Network maintenance programs are a lot like car insurance. You need to have it but only use it once in a while. Like car insurance, you can pay a range for the same coverage depending on which provider you choose. The good news is that Cisco is great networking equipment and very reliable. The other good news is that it's often mission critical and there has to be a plan that includes a spare on the shelf or in the rack, or at least next business day replacement.

Imagine paying 50% less for the same network hardware coverage and working with a trusted company that has been in the IT hardware industry for thirty years and has thousands of networking items in stock. The Worldtech™ maintenance program from World Data Products provides the peace of mind you need, at a price that is well under the OEM, and very competitive when compared to other third party maintenance providers.

Here is how a third party network maintenance program can be a benefit to your department:

Third party network maintenance offers considerable savings versus OEM plans. The biggest reason that companies use third party maintenance is because of the significant savings. Who wouldn't be interested in a plan that offers most of the coverage options that the OEM offers, but at half of the cost?

Third party plans can cover legacy products no longer supported by the OEM. IT hardware manufacturers encourage or require upgrading to their newest equipment on a schedule, roughly every three years. As a result, it can be difficult to maintain support for legacy hardware that is working just fine. Third party maintenance providers are much more flexible with the hardware that can be covered, this extends the life and return on investment for gear that is stable and working.

Third party maintenance works well side-by-side with OEM program. Maintenance plans are not an “all or nothing” proposition. You can keep your OEM coverage on some of your networking gear and have third party coverage on other components. Whatever makes the most sense for your department and your budget.

Excited to learn what the Worldtech™ third party network maintenance program can do for your company? Request a complimentary network maintenance cost analysis or call 1-888-210-7636 to speak with one of our Worldtech™ specialists today.

  • Hardware Emergencies: Hot Spare or Maintenance Program?

Fighting Fires How to Handle Server Hardware Emergencies

You are on the team that is responsible for data center performance and reliability, that means putting out server or networking fires. Is your strategy dependent on maintenance programs, hot spares in the rack or on the shelf, or some combination of both?

Server hardware failure. It happens all the time. Server components such as power supplies or drives will fail eventually.

Fire Extinguishing Tip: Be prepared. Make sure you have spares for your key server components available onsite. If you don't keep spares on hand, World Data Products offers maintenance programs to provide replacements when you need them most.

The key to putting out most IT hardware fires is to develop quality relationships before the emergency so when your next hardware fire pops up, you'll be ready.

  • Dispose of Old Servers for Free

Every few years, IT Asset Disposition (ITAD) professionals are tasked with the responsibility to dispose of decommissioned or surplus server equipment. Many companies pay an electronics recycling company to take away used servers instead of handling disposal themselves. Electronics disposal can be expensive and there is a better way.

used servers IT Asset Disposition made easy!

What if we told you that you could get rid of your old servers quickly, and potentially make a profit in the process? If it's old, like, really old, there may be no value left for resale. We will help you determine which hardware can be resold, picked up at no cost to you, or sent to your local recycling company if that is the only option left.

Choosing the right server reseller is the key to success. For thirty years, World Data Products has been helping organizations capture more return on investment from IT assets. Plus, we make the process easy!

We buy used servers, networking equipment, and storage from many brands including Cisco, Dell, HP, UCS, IBM, Super Micro, EMC, NetApp and others. We also buy and sell IP phones, wireless access points and controllers.
