Certified computer tape
is available from World Data Products and several other providers. Some companies claim that their certified tape will perform better than the same tape in new condition. How can they can claim such a thing? How is it possible that previously used, certified tape could be superior to new tape?
First, what do we know about new magnetic media tape? "New" backup tape may be recently manufactured or a new-old-stock product that has never been deployed in a tape library. New tape is typically batch tested after the manufacturing run.
Batch testing backup tape
involves pulling a few random tapes from a batch that could be hundreds or thousands of items, and testing those tapes. If the selected tapes pass quality control testing, it's assumed that all of the tapes in the batch are good and they are packaged for sale. Only a few tapes were tested for performance and reliability and that most of the new tapes have not, which could mean that they won't perform as well as the test tapes.
Certified tape starts its life like any other new tape, it is manufactured, sold for use in tape libraries, and mounted to backup important data. At some point due to a hardware or cartridge change, the tapes are sold to a company such as World Data Products as used tape. Here is where and how a used tape becomes a "certified" tape: A USED tape is an untested tape that has not been cleaned up or refurbished to like-new condition. It may or may not have data on it. It may or may not have been partially erased or even degaussed. Most data tapes that have been degaussed cannot be reused. A CERTIFIED tape from World Data Products has been cleaned, and tested 100% from end-to-end, certified to be error-free with no permanent or gross errors. This means that the tape has been checked in real time from beginning to end and passed quality assurance testing. It is a time-intensive process and the only way to guaranty that the tape will function as intended and be reliable.
Not all vendors have the same process to test and certify tape
Notice that during our tape certification process, every used tape is erased and tested for performance and reliability. This is one of the significant differences between certified tape and new tape. With new tape, it's possible to purchase a tape with a manufacturing defect and not know until it fails when deployed in the tape library. With certified tape, you are confident that every tape from World Data Products has been tested.
So, is certified tape better than new tape? It can be. A certified tape that has been tested end to end can be more reliable than a new tape.
