  • Total Data Eradication for Computer Tape

Recycling used or new surplus computer tape has never been easier. Not only is it environmentally friendly, selling old or surplus tape has another benefit: Instead of paying for disposal, companies can profit from the sale of decommissioned tape.

Best of all, World Data Products guarantees total data eradication.

Not all computer tape resellers have the standards required for total data eradication. Some companies simply rewrite the tape header. In this case, the tape drive will consider the tape to be empty because the header is clean, but the data is still there. This means that there is still a chance the data on the tape could be read. Other companies overwrite a portion of the tape but don't erase the entire tape from end to end. Data Erasure is a time-consuming process that can take up to two hours per LTO tape.

This is our process at World Data Products:

    1. Audit the tapes by Volser. This audit is compared to the list of tapes that are approved to be destroyed. While this might seem to be an unnecessary step, we can assure you that many tapes are accidentally destroyed when an audit is not performed.
    2. Overwrite each tape from end to end.
    3. Read and write each tape from end to end.
    4. Provide a certification letter. This will serve as proof that the data on the tapes was completely eradicated, tracing each tape by Volser.

  • Choosing a Vendor for Computer Tape

You’ve done the analysis and made the decision, you’re going to buy certified computer tape to both save money, and increase the reliability of your library. Your next task is to select a vendor. You will find that there are many tape suppliers but only some provide Certified tape. How do you determine which reseller has the quality of tapes that your department requires?

When choosing a tape vendor, consider the following questions:

    1. How much time is spent eradicating data and certifying each tape? This question serves as a quick litmus test that can help you gauge what kind of company you are working with. For instance, it can take up to two hours to eradicate data from an LTO4. If you get a super-short time estimate, move on.
    2. What is your certified tape guarantee? If a company won’t guarantee its products, it’s time to find another vendor.
    3. How many errors are allowed? The answer to this question should be “zero permanent and gross errors”. However, not all vendors adhere to the same standards. Knowing how many errors a company allows gives an indication of the level of quality.
    4. What is your data eradication process? While there are variations in the eradication process within the industry, vendors should include the following steps to ensure the quality of a certified tape:
    • End-to-end tape rewrite and read/write testing on all data tracks. Companies that don’t specify an end-to-end rewrite or that provide vague answers to this question should be avoided as it is likely that sensitive data will remain on their tapes. Beware of any company that won’t guarantee a complete end-to-end tape rewrite and read/write testing.
    • Data eradication by Volser. Computer tape that is scheduled to be eradicated should be tracked and audited at the Volser level. This ensures that the reseller, and you, know exactly which tapes have been destroyed.
    • Letter certifying total data eradication. This is a written guarantee that states which tape data was destroyed on which day, by whom, and the method. Keeping this letter on file for future reference is a best practice so you can prove exactly what data was eradicated.

    Conclusion
